Helping needy Malagasy kids to become

Jesus’ kids!

June 2002                 Volume 5, Number 6

“Religion that God the Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”
                                                    James 1:27

Who needs a bus?
Who needs a bus?  Not the Betikara kiddoes, that’s for sure!  We’ve been feeling so sorry for the lambs.  They have been cooped up in that teeny house with no yard for five whole months now, and with almost no fuel to be found in this entire city, we can’t even take them on a field trip.  This last weekend the lambs solved their own problem.  It was all their idea.  We were skeptical at first but it turned into an absolutely lovely jaunt.
On Sunday afternoon, after worship and lunch, the lambs (accompanied by four of the young adults of the church)  walked from the center in town to Ambohijanahary, a 14 kilometer (about 11 miles) trip.  They arrived at Rivo’s house at dusk and built themselves a campfire, cooked their supper over the fire, sang, prayed, and enjoyed the evening out of doors.  Don’t even ask me where Rivo put them all to sleep in his small house, but that’s exactly where they slept.
Monday morning revele was at 6:00am and they commenced another long hike out to the Betikara land.  We suggested that the smaller children stay at our house and play with Havilah for the day, but they would have none of it, even Havilah demanded to go.  It has been so long since they have been there and they were all excited at the prospect of seeing the progress on their new home.  Eleven more kilometers on foot (about 9 miles), another campfire and lunch, time to run and play in vast open spaces, and then another 11 kilometers back to Ambohijanahary.
Monday was an extremely cold and windy day with about 100% humidity but that didn’t stop the lambs.  They arrived at our home on Monday evening at about 7:30 pm where they all enjoyed about 5 cups of hot chocolate each. They were bedraggled and dirty, so tired they could hardly move, quieter than I have ever seen them before, but they were extremely happy for having had a day away from their little house in town.
On Monday night the group divided up for sleep in three different homes.  Sunday night must have been just a little too tight.  Tuesday morning, I had already started school with Havilah, but at 9:00am twenty lambs plus a few stragglers they picked up along the way hurdled through our gate ready to swing, ride bikes, roller skate, play basketball and soccer and just run and jump and play and make lots of noise.  Their energy had returned.  They played until noon while the young adults cooked lunch for them.
By noon, I could see definite signs of extreme fatigue.  Lunch was a hurried affair.  The lambs were more than ready for their own beds.  God provides.  They managed to find one of the rare busses running on black market fuel and caught a ride back to the center.  Three days, 29 miles on foot, 2 campfires, lots of fun and lots of thanksgiving for a blessing from God, a chance to get out of town and play and play and play.

Class Rankings
It was just under a month ago that the lambs started back to school after the political strikes and three months off school and even this last month, school has been very sporadic, but already the teachers gave tests and ranked the students in preparation for a new trimester.  Here are the results.  We are very pleased with a few, very disappointed at others, and got exactly what we expected in most cases especially considering their erratic school attendance since the beginning of 2002.  The first number represents the child’s class rank, the second shows the number of students the child was competing against.

Who can turn away from faces like these?
These four little lambs are the newest at Betikara, but they have been with us for almost six months now and still do not have full sponsorship.  Two of them have partial sponsorship and two have them have no sponsorship at all.  If you would like to be a special friend to one of these lambs and can take on the monthly sponsorship fee of $25.00, please let us know.  Thanks.
