Helping needy Malagasy kids to become

Jesus’ kids!

July 2003                 Volume 6, Number 7

“He will defend the afflicted among the people and save the children of the needy.”             Psalm 72:4

6 students passed the big test
It’s another one of those unanswerable questions.
           “Who did Cain marry?”
           “I don’t know.”
“How can a child spend nine months of his or her sixth grade education studying for a grueling elimination test to qualify for junior high school, pass the test, and not pass sixth grade?
           “I have no idea!”
And yet, that’s exactly what happened.  Our seven test takers set out one morning with Zoky Andry (a Betikara caregiver and the children’s tutor) accompanying them.  They were in a state of nerves at a fever pitch.  They walked all the way to city center with one hope.  They hoped to find their names on the list of those children island-wide who passed the test for which they had studied nine months.
HOORAH!  Six of our lambs passed the test!  Congratulations go to Jean Marc, Clara, Fetra, Yosly, Hermine, and Tsiry.  They passed and excitement ran high.  Now, on to the list naming those children who passed sixth grade and will move on to Junior High next year.  We expected all six who passed the test to move on.  After all, they had spent all nine months of sixth grade preparing for this test.
Congratulations go to Jean Marc, Clara, Fetra and Yosly.  We were a bit disappointed.  Hermine and Tsiry, though passing the big test, did not pass sixth grade and will have to repeat the year.  They will not have to retake the test.  The hard part is over, but they will have to repeat their sixth year.  A few days after the trip to town to view the pass list, the school called Hermine and Tsiry in to tell them that they had indeed qualified for seventh grade and would move on up with the other four.  The school was not sure why their names did not appear on the list in town.  Our spirits soared once again.  We all hugged and kissed the graduates, patted them on the back and declared a job well done.  Then, the school called Hermine and Tsiry back again to tell them that they would not be moving up after all.
Six passed the test.  Four will move on to the public junior high school with Sedera and Robert, who have already attended junior high for two years. Hermine and Tsiry will have to attend sixth grade in a private school next year, but they will not have to take the test.  Prisca did not pass the test nor sixth grade.  She will repeat sixth grade and prepare once again for the test along with her younger sister, Elisa, and also with Elisoa, all three who will take the test next year.
On a Saturday morning in June, I baked four cakes for all seven who made the effort and for 12 other lambs who wanted to join in the celebration.  Those cakes took me five hours to bake and it took the lambs only five minutes to devour them, but it was a fun five minutes and the test takers were duly honored.
We await end of the year pass reports on the 12 lambs who did not take a big test this year.  We will let you know as soon as the results are in.  In the meantime, it is not too early to begin praying for the next school year.  Thanks.

Lambs sing at Rivo’s wedding

It’s Malagasy custom for a groom to invite two people amongst his friends to represent all his friends at his wedding, but Rivo would have none of it.  He insisted on inviting all the Betikara lambs and all the caregivers too.  Those lambs had a sweet surprise in store for someone they count as a big brother.  The lambs sang a blessing upon Rivo and Fano, and it was one of the most touching parts of the wedding!

Pouring the floor of Phase II
We purchased 1000 bags of cement this month with the money you have so generously donated to Betikara for phase II, and the floor for phase II (the large meeting room and ten smaller classrooms) will be poured in the next few weeks.  Half of the work crew will pour the floor, doing everything by hand, right down to carrying water up from the lake, mixing cement with shovels, and moving it to the floor area one wheelbarrow at a time.  The other half of the work crew continues to raise the center walls between the orphanage dormitories to complete the lambs’ end of Betikara.

A New-Found Friend

Betikara has at least seven girls and almost as many boys who love to giggle and they have found a fellow giggler this month in Angela Schellenberg, our newly arrived, 21 year old,  volunteer from Canada.  She stepped off the plane on the evening of June 30, and on July 1st stepped onto her first Malagasy bus and headed to town to meet the lambs.  She has already become a fixture at Betikara and she giggles along with the best of them.  The children love her.  We all love her, and appreciate her deeply for giving herself to Betikara.  She will be with us for five weeks and it will be a difficult goodbye.
