Helping needy Malagasy kids to become

Jesus’ kids!

His First Birthday Celebration
ANDRIAMPANDRY Jean Claude.  We call him Andry for short.  He came to Betikara four years ago.  His parents brought him to Antananarivo from a coastal city in Madagascar and abandoned him.  Two kind women found him in an open market, felt sorry for him, and took him home until they could find a place for him in this big city.  They found us, and Betikara opened arms to Andry.  He wasn’t able to tell us much then and he doesn’t tell us much now.  He didn’t even know his birthday or his age.  But, Andry has made a place for himself at Betikara and we wouldn’t be the same without him.
Betikara went to court to get legal guardianship of this abandoned child.  We laugh about it now, but at the time it was absolutely crucial that the court assign Andry an age below ten years old so that we could get him into the public school system.  Thankfully, the judge went along with that idea and assigned Andry an age of nine years old in 2000, assigning him a birth year of 1992.  That would make him thirteen years old this year.  He’s more like seventeen, but we don’t mind.   Andry doesn’t mind either.  What he does mind, is that the judge never assigned him a birth month and day.
When Betikara first took in children, we didn’t worry much over birthdays.  Malagasy custom for birthdays is just a special greeting, no cake, no gifts, no birthday song, and so we just followed Malagasy custom.  Still Andry felt left out because he never even got the greeting.
Over the years however, with volunteers, visitors, and sponsors from the western world, celebrating birthdays at Betikara has become a matter of singing, eating cake and giving gifts.  Andry doesn’t have a date, so he never got a cake or heard the birthday song in honor of him.
It’s taken us several years to rectify it.  We assigned the month and day of Andry’s coming to Betikara as his birthday and this year we honored him with cake (he chose the flavor), specially wrapped gifts, and the birthday song.  He acted more like a nine year old  than a seventeen year old, but that’s ok, because it was Andry’s first birthday ever.  He had a wonderful time and finally, he’s just like the other Betikara lambs.  He has a real month, a real day and a real year!  June 10, 1992!

Happy Birthday, Andry!

The first pair of numbers represent the child’s test score out of the total possible number.  Anything above 50% is a good score and considered a pass mark.  The second pair of numbers represents the child’s rank out of the number of children in his or her class.  The third number represents the grade which each student will begin in September of 2004.

Special congratulations to Elisoa and Prisca for passing the Elementary finishing test and being admitted to Junior High School in September.

Great work, Elisoa and Prisca!

School Break Fun
All but three of the lambs are enjoying one week with extended family now that school is out.  Yosly is again going all the way to the northern tip of the island to visit his grandparents.
The lambs will return to Betikara just about the time that we will welcome four visitors from France who will spend two weeks of fun and games with the lambs, including a one day trip to Antsirabe to show another town of this beautiful island to our French helpers.
In August, Betikara will make the big move from the inner city house to the new large home outside of this big capital city.  The lambs will need your special prayers at this time to help them adjust to the move and to the new schools they will attend come September.

In Memory
Betikara is praying for the family of
               Dr. Hobby
of Paragould, Arkansas, as they grieve for their loved one.
