Helping needy Malagasy kids to become

Jesus’ kids!

"A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor."         Proverbs 22:9

Another Operation
It was back in August of 2000, in the “His Work” newsletter that we wrote about Rivo’s appendectomy.  (You may want to read that newsletter to refresh your memory before you continue with this newsletter, http://www.madagascar-mission.org/newsletters/2000/august2000.html .)  This last month we experienced another appendectomy at Betikara.  This time it was not an adult that needed her appendices removed.  Rather it was Elisa, one of the Betikara Lambs.
Elisa is only 13 years old, and for the last several months she complained of not feeling well to her stomach and having a pain in her side.  We took Elisa to three different doctors.  One of the doctors was a specialist in Appendectomies.  All of their findings were the same.  Elisa had a slowly leaking appendices and needed to have it removed.
It was with a lot of reservation that we finally decided to take Elisa to the local hospital that Rivo visited for his operation.  When Rivo had his operation the hospital was not even legally licensed with the Malagasy government.  (The hospital was closed down by the government shortly after Rivo’s operation).  Construction on the building was only half completed and the doctor was not accustomed to using anesthetics when operation on his patients.  We were pleasantly surprised to find that the hospital and the doctor have changed a lot since 2000.
Now the hospital is fully licensed with the government and the doctor does provide anesthetics for his patients.  Elisa entered the hospital on a Tuesday afternoon.  She was operated on Wednesday afternoon, and we took her back to the orphanage on Friday morning, only to return to the hospital the following Wednesday to have Elisa’s stitches removed.  Through all of this Elisa never complained of being uncomfortable or hurting because of the operation that she just went through, even though we could see by her face and her tensing up in the car that she was not comfortable.
It was not an easy trip to the Betikara orphanage on that Friday Elisa was released from the hospital.  The roads here in Madagascar are bad and the journey that should have only taken one half hour, took over two hours because we had to go extremely slow.  Upon arriving at Betikara Elisa received treatment like royalty.  There were always people to talk to her and take care of her every need.  Nivo (who is pictured with Elisa) spent a lot of her time reading from the Bible to Elisa.

It was quite some time before Elisa felt her strength returning.  Elisa’s color is finally returning to normal and she is up and around all of the time.  It has only been the past week or so that Elisa has not looked like a “Vazaha” (white person).  She will definitely be ready for the start of school in just a couple of weeks.  Please pray for Elisa as she continues to recuperate from her operation.

A Betikara Volunteer returns home

When Laura first arrived at Betikara in June she came with one of her friends (Kate) from Ireland.  It was only one month before Laura’s friend returned home leaving Laura on her own with the Betikara Lambs.  Laura was planning on staying at least three months, but shortly after her friend left Betikara Laura received a phone call from home.  Laura was told that her grandmother was ill and that she needed to return to Ireland.
We want to take this opportunity to thank Laura for her help and willingness to serve in many different areas.  Both Laura and Kate spent many hours working with the Betikara Lambs and teaching them different school subjects.  They also spent many hours playing with the Lambs.  It did not take long for them to become good friends with the Lambs even though they did not speak Malagasy.
The day we went to Betikara to talk to Laura first hand we had to wait for her to come up from down below.  She was down at the clothes lines right along side the Betikara workers hanging clothes for the orphans.  Laura wants to return to Betikara some day in the future.  We look forward to that day and pray that it is not too far in the future.  Laura truly is a servant and we all can learn a lot from her serving attitude.

School starts soon for the Lambs
It will only be a couple of weeks now before the Lambs will return to the books.  Please pray especially for Andry as we try to find a place for him in some type of technical training.  Andry did not pass this last year at the primary school and will not be allowed to enter the equivalent of junior high in America.  We are praying that a local technical school in Ivato will have a place for Andry.  Two of the Betikara Lambs already go to Ivato (about 5 miles from the orphanage) every day for classes, so it will not be difficult at all for Andry to go with them each day if he is accepted into the technical school.  Otherwise, Andry will have nowhere to study this coming school year.
