Helping needy Malagasy kids to become

Jesus’ kids!

November 2006                 Volume 9, Number 11

"A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor."         Proverbs 22:9

As soon as our car pulled up to Betikara, the kids surrounded me and each individually shook my hand and politely introduced themselves.  I was in total shock !  I had expected them to be more like American children, where you have to chase them down to get them to talk to you.  But right from the start these kids could not have been more warm and loving.  Three weeks has passed and nothing has changed.  I had expected to come to Betikara and to have my heart broken by these wonderful children, but instead they have made me a much happier person.  The loving energy that these kids put out never stops, and they spread it to each other.  I'll give you an example.
Only days before I had arrived at Betikara a new child, Angeline, arrived to join her brother Gilbert.  Angeline was an incredibly serious child, and it was obvious that her little heart was very heavy.   I lined up all the younger kids to take pictures of them individually, and I could not coax a smile out of her.  A week passed and she was unrecognizable as that sad little girl.  She was clean, all smiles, and playing great with the other kids.  I pulled out my camera again and I didn't even have to ask, she offered up one of the cutest smiles I have ever seen.   The transformation that she went through in such a little amount of time was truly amazing. God really does use Betikara and all the people involved in it to make miracles for these children.

Another Difficult Goodbye

We always have so much fun with our volunteers, but there always comes the day when we have to say another difficult goodbye.  Betikara said goodbye to Danielle Allen today after her six week stay with the lambs of Betikara.  She lived right in the same house with us.  She ate rice till she thought she would choke.  She shared her fish with us when eyes, scales, and fins just got too much for her.  She bleached our door handles and toilet seats and scolded us for sharing drinking glasses and food when we all had the flu.  She sang with us and played with us and made each one of us feel special.  In six short weeks, she became one of us and it is sooooooooooooooo difficult to say goodbye.
But!  We send her off with many hugs, many prayers, and a few tears, knowing she will come back some day.  They always do!!!!!  Thank you, Danielle.  You have changed our lives.  We will not forget you!!! You are one of us!!!

What about Christmas?

It’s just around the corner.  Many of you have already asked, “What can we do for the lambs for Christmas?”  We have already received several boxes and are building a stash of goodies so that the lambs will have a wonderful Christmas again this year.  If you are a Betikara child sponsor, or if you just love the kids and have thought about sending a goodie for Christmas, here are some ideas of things we need at Betikara:

  • Clothing (especially for ages 4-11)
  • Shoes (4-11 age range)
  • Personal supplies (shampoo, deodorant, combs, brushes, toothbrushes, hair thingys, etc.)
  • Balls (basketball, soccer, rubber, ping pong balls and paddles) and games
or,

you can feed a child for a year by
becoming a Betikara sponsor and
share the gift of life this Christmas.
