/ 2009 End of School Year Results
It is now September and many children have already started back to school
around the world. However, in Madagascar many students will not start their
2009 - 2010 school year until the end of the first or second week of October.
The delay in the start of the school year is being blamed on the political
crisis in Madagascar earlier this year when, for the most part, the
government schools shut down and the children could not study. Since the
schools were shut for the better part of two months this delayed the big end
of year exams that take place in Madagascar. Two of the exams for high school
students, the technical exam and the regular exam took place on August 20th
and 26th respectively.
Now everyone is sitting on pins and needles waiting for the results to be
posted. In the mean time we do have some school news concerning the Betikara
Lambs that were not involved in the high school exams. All four of our
students that took the junior high leaving exam passed and will be moving on
to high school in October. Those students were Lanto, Princy, Elisa, and
Elisoa. We are going to have a big party for the victorious exam takers in
the coming weeks.
There are some notable items about the marks of other Betikara Lambs. If you
look at the two tables on the front page of the Betikara newsletter you will
notice that two students, Princy and Vieinah Irma placed first in their
classes every marking period this last year. Also, you will notice that
Elisoa and Freda placed second consistently this last year. We are so proud
of these Lambs for their continued perseverance in studying.
On a sadder note you will find that Jean Louis is at the other end of the
spectrum in his studies. Jean Louis consistently placed last every marking
period this last year. We are busy trying to find a way for him to continue
studying. The difficulty is that technical schools many times require that a
student at least pass the junior high exam. Jean Louis cannot pass this exam.
We have a few possibilities in front of us.
First, Jean Louis may have to leave Betikara. The policy states that if the
Lambs are not actively studying to further their education they cannot stay
at Betikara. If children stay and do not study this would possibly cause
others to not study. Second, we can try and hire a private tutor for Jean
Louis for a few months to see if he will be able to pass the junior high exam.
Third, We can try to get Jean Louis a place in a private school that will
hopefully help him past his inability to study properly and pass the test. We ask that you pray for Jean Louis and the other Betikara Lambs. School is not easy in Madagascar under the best of circumstances. This recent ongoing political unrest is making things even more difficult for the children of Madagascar. Pray for a quick end to the political stalemate.
Jean Louis
