Our Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I greet you in the name of our Lord and Saviour
Jesus Christ. May His richest
blessings be showered down upon you, and may He sustain you in your
daily lives.
This newsletter finds us well and greatly blessed by the Lord this
last month. He
has watched over me especially in granting safety and strength.
As many of you know we have been trying to find
water on a piece of land in
South Nyanza, with hopes of being able to build a house and be closer
to the Luo
work. Everything has been on hold waiting to see if water can
be found in plentiful
supply, and when none was to be had after slowly chiseling through
26 feet of solid
rock I was anxious to help the work along. So...I decided to
borrow a hammer drill
with a 1/2 inch mason bit to help. I thought that going down
into the well hole
myself, and drilling the rock to make it easier to chisel, would speed
up the
process of digging the well hole. Good idea if I have to say
so myself (even though
Stacy did not want me to go down into the well hole). However,
what I did not take
into consideration was that I weigh twice as much if not more that
the men who were
hired to do the work. Upon starting to go down the way I had
seen it done many
times by these two men, the stick I was standing on broke, and I dropped
to the
bottom tearing up my left elbow, left knee and hurting my right foot.
How badly I
was hurt I did not know, but I was at least breathing.
I was retrieved from the well hole, by standing
in a bucket that was tied onto
the rope, while praying that the same thing was not going to happen
again. I drove
myself to the doctor in Kisii town (16 miles away), only to find out
that they could
not come to a consensus as to whether or not my foot was broken.
Not an uncommon
thing in upcountry Kenya. We drove to Nairobi to see an American
doctor who is an
orthopedic surgeon, and I was admitted to the Nairobi Hospital for
surgery on the
18th of March. The doctor put two screws into my heel that was
crushed by the fall,
making the need for a cast non existent. For this I thank the
Lord.
Already I have been given permission to walk lightly
on my foot (with the use
of crutches), and have high hopes that I can start keeping my appointments
again as
early as the end of April. I am going to make good use of my
time at home in
writing Luo materials and doing some translating work. We are
just thankful that I
am still able to serve our Lord and Master here in South Nyanza.
Even though I am laid up for a while, the
work among the Luo people is
progressing. Before my accident I was able to attend two meetings
at which 9 people
were baptized, and since that time two other meetings have been attended
by Roger
Moon and David High, at which several others have come to know our
Lord and Saviour.
We pray for continued growth in the churches and an awareness of the
strength that
comes from God alone.
As many of you have heard on the news in America,
Kenya is going through many
changes which are causing fighting in different areas. There
have been riots in
Kisii town where some individuals tried to burn down the police station
and the milk
processing plant. One government vehicle was also burned.
This has not caused us
any problems so far, however, some Kenyans are not thinking to kindly
of American
citizens, since "Americans are forcing the government to change".
Please remember
these things in your daily prayers. It is our prayer that whatever
happens in
Kenya, that it will happen without a civil war or a revolution.
Many souls would be
lost that could be taught Jesus.
We thank God for your concern in the Luo work
and pray that you will be
blessed through your service, both in America and Kenya. We are
looking forward to
seeing you face to face in the near future.
In His Service,
Barry J. Rosie
